Chickens Eggs & Poultry
Feeding, Powering and Clothing a Hungry Nation
Friday August 10 saw us all rather excited with a trip to then EKKA planned - a great day out! This is where the country meets the city with a blend of different things on display & on show. It was also the conclusion of beef week with some rather large beasts on display both in pens and out in the main arena on show. We also had the opportunity to visit our school chickens who are competing in the 'Hyline Brown Schools Egg Laying Competition'. There were LOTS of chickens on display, and it seems the competition has been quite popular! The beef on display were HUGE and most of our crew were somewhat blown away by the size, especially by comparison to the diminutive size of our Archi-cow. They were warned but were not really fully prepared for exactly how big beef cattle can be.

So there is a little lego trading community... OK. Oh - its a little global community of several million people! Ok! In the hunt for 'just the right' lego to tell our story, our teacher signed up for this trading community and before we knew it, we had purchased lego from all over the world. Our first international order came from Horst, in the Netherlands Our second international order came from Cellettes in France We then added another order from Breda in the Netherlands and then added an order from Lohne in Germany. In addition, we have purchased lego from WA, QLD, NSW and Target. A very international cow indeed! But don't worry - all that international currency makes it very difficult to work out exactly how much we have spent on Lego (which is becoming just a little addictive) And if you're interested in joining this 'little' lego trading community, you'll find the link at www.bricklink.com Happy shopping! With a little inspiration from Aimee at Little Brick Pastoral and a little bit of liaison (she is such a gem) we'd like to introduce you to our Calvary Farmers - Basil and Jessie. These two inspirational egg farmers who will be sharing our Archibull Journey with you this year were named by our class by voting. It seems our farmers are rather ambitious and quite keen to take on the world, despite their diminutive size. Watch this space to see their adventures and capers as our Archibull journey continues!
Tuesday the first of May saw our YFC for 2018 breeze into Calvary to share her story. Jasmine is an absolute dynamo with a passion for all things Agricultural. With her vast knowledge in the chicken industry and with our Year 9 co-hort deep in a 'Disease' unit, our teacher took the opportunity to get Jasmin about disease management in the chicken industry and how that translates to us as people. It was fascinating.
With our school birds, we came to appreciate that our yolks were 'under yellow' and wouldn't make the cut for a commercial production. Jasmine came down the farm for a walk and we introduced her to our flock. We have entered the Hyline Brown Egg laying competition at the EKKA this year and were hoping our birds for this would have arrived, but sadly they hadn't. Jasmine shared the secret to the golden yolk in their production - but if we spill that here, we'd have to kill you. Was rather cool though and not something we'd ever considered!
Meet Poultrina Eggspress. We took some time to think of a creative name for her that involved the egg and the poultry industry and we look forward to the learning that we will do under her watchful gaze.
